The streets, markets, neighbourhoods and railway stations of Kolkata—inside and out—have never been without hawkers. They have been part of the city’s growth at every turn, woven into every layer of its life. Kolkata is almost impossible to imagine without them. And yet, those very hawkers are now branded as “illegal encroachers”. Where does the resistance to these evictions stand today? What has become of the law that was meant to protect hawkers?
